Call for Work in Progress (WiP) Contributions

Work In Progress

The Work-in-Progress (WiP) session provides an opportunity to present and discuss new challenges and visions, showcase early research results, and explore novel research directions. The specific aim of the WiP session is to provide a forum for timely presentation, discussion and feedback for novel, controversial, and thought-provoking ideas. All selected papers will be presented as posters in a special conference session and published as part of the PerCom Workshops proceedings to be published by IEEE and included in the IEEE Xplore digital library. Contributions are solicited in all areas of pervasive computing research and applications. Papers are expected to report on early or ongoing research on any aspect of pervasive computing and communications. Preliminary experimental results are appreciated. In particular, we look for contributions on:

  • Advances in pervasive systems and infrastructures: middleware systems and services; data engineering for pervasive computing; clouds, cloudlets, and fog computing; integration of smartphones in pervasive experiences; applications of device-to-device coordination.
  • Advances in Theories, models, and algorithms: context modeling and reasoning; adaptive and context-aware computing; activity recognition; programing paradigms; applied machine learning; cognitive computing techniques.
  • Innovative pervasive computing applications.
  • New ways of leveraging pervasive computing with: social networks; opportunistic networks; Internet of things; sensor networks; RFID systems; big data and cyber-physical systems.
  • New techniques for user-level concerns: participatory and social sensing; trust, security, and privacy; user interface, interaction, and persuasion; social networking and pervasive computing.
  • Technological innovations: architectures, protocols, and technologies for pervasive communications; mobile and wearable computing systems and services; smart devices and intelligent environments; positioning and tracking technologies.

Submission Guidelines

Authors are requested to submit original, unpublished manuscripts in standard IEEE proceedings format (two-column format with a 4-page limit including figures, tables, and references) in PDF format that include contact information of all the authors.

All manuscripts must be registered and submitted through the EDAS submission site.

The submitted manuscripts will be reviewed by the WiP Technical Program Committee. The authors of accepted papers will present their work during the main conference in a special poster session and must register for the conference (at least one author must have a full registration).

New this year! The WiP Chairs and the WiP Program Committee will also select up to three finalists for best WiP contribution. Each best WiP candidate will be given an additional 10 minute presentation as part of the main conference in addition to their poster presentations. The committee will select a best WiP contribution from among these finalists, with the award to be presented at the conference.

The papers of the WiP session will be published in the conference's workshop proceedings and will be indexed by DBLP and the IEEE digital library. A subset of the best WiP contributions may also given opportunity to submit extended versions of their work to be considered for a special issue of the Elsevier journal of Pervasive and Mobile Computing (PMC) along with papers from the main track. Note that authors selected for this option would have to satisfy the PMC journal requirements for contribution, so the paper would have to include significant extensions to the accepted contents of the WiP paper.

Important Dates

  • Submission deadline: December 7. 2019
  • Notification of acceptance: January 7, 2020
